Summer Plein Air Classes - Watercolor

  • Newberg, Oregon USA (map)

This summer Christine Joy will be teaching weekly (Tuesdays from 10am-noon) watercolor plein air classes at many lovely locations in the Newberg area - from parks to farms and vineyards! There are 7 class days total, and students can sign up for classes at $45 per session. Students can choose from as many classes as are available, and can jump in at any point throughout the summer. All painting experience levels are welcome. Christine would love to paint with you! To see class availability and read more about these classes check the Chehalem Cultural Center’s website:

Below is the class schedule:

Tuesday, July 5th - Little Lavender Farm (Held at the Dundee location)

Choosing A Composition - When painting outdoors, it can be daunting to choose what to paint from a vast and beautiful scenery. In this class we will be focusing on composition (arranging the elements and areas of focus within our painting in a way that pleases the eye). Christine will discuss the rule of thirds, and share some different techniques in beginning a watercolor painting outdoors.

Tuesday, July 12th - Pollinate Gardens

Color Theory Basics - In this class we will discuss the basics of color theory and learn how to paint something naturally vibrant and colorful like a flower. Here we will focus on painting a floral scene, and retain that high chroma color that we love to see in flowers.

Tuesday, July 19th - Koch Family Farms

Color Theory Continued - Many times while painting outdoors we will discover that the paints we have (right out of the tube) are much brighter and more vibrant than what they are in real life. In this class we will be discussing how to neutralize our color palette to match the colors we see in nature.

Tuesday, July 26th - Rogers Landing

How To Paint Water - Water is a subject that can seem tricky to many painters because of its translucent and reflective nature. In this class we will be tackling the challenge of painting a river, and here we will notice how the weather and light affects the way that we paint the water.

Tuesday, August 9th - Location TBD

Brushwork and Texture- Our paint brushes are capable of more than what meets the eye! In this class, Christine will be showing several different ways to use a paint brush to create a variety of textures within our watercolor painting. We will focus on creating smooth and rough textures within our painting.

Tuesday, August 16th - Meraviglioso Winery

Perspective and Linework - Getting the initial sketch of your scene down accurately from the get go is a great way to get your painting started! Here we will be focusing on how the use of lines in our initial sketch can create a sense of perspective in our painting. A vineyard is a perfect place to learn this very thing!

Tuesday, August 23rd - Champoeg Park

How To Paint Trees - Trees are one of the most common elements of a landscape painting (especially in the Pacific Northwest). While they are such a seemingly simple part of a landscape, they are so intricately detailed and complex. By including these complexities and the uniqueness of each tree, our painting will come to life!
